I have a two point of lay Coronation Sussex pullets (and their boyfriend and guardian, a Coronation Sussex rooster a couple of months older than the pullets). None of these birds have ever used the provided roosts, but hunker down in the corner of the converted box stall coop in the shavings. They seem large and not too graceful, so I provided a roost at just a few inches, and another a foot or so off the floor.
As I said, they just don't use the roosts at all. I will eventually want to give them a nest box to lay in, but don't want them to sleep in there now. Shall I wait until the first egg is laid, then provide the boxes?
Is it normal for such large, slow growing birds to not roost? Will that change as they mature? I have no intention of going out to the barn and placing them on their roosts at night....just wanted some breed specific advice as to whether I'm on the right track and what to expect.
Thanks!:D

Our coronations don't use nest boxes..... I think it's largely their big size... They also refuse to roost. I've been thinking about this very issue and am thinking of building them a sort of platform where they can get off the ground. I may use a pallet cut in half for evening time.

They are "stuck in their laying corner and again, thinking of modifying a slightly elevated space for them so the eggs will stay drier and off the ground.and add a ramp to it... good luck

What a good suggestion...although the corners of the coop are very clean (it's huge, and only three chickens don't make much of a mess), I love the platform idea. Will think about it some more. Thanks!;)
