We are getting ready to build a new coop and I am going to build a new set of roll away nesting boxes. I am wondering if there is preferable height for the boxes to be off the ground. We will have 22 layers, how many boxes should I make?

I don't know about a preferabale height, but lower than the roosts should be good. For 22 hens 7 boxes should be sufficient.

I had 24 in one coop, and provided 24 nesting boxes. My Rhode Island Reds used only one box to lay their eggs.

I don't think there's a set height, just lower than the roosts. They say 1 nest for every 3 hens though some people have one or 2 large communal nests since they all lay in the same one anyway.
24 nests!! Omg that's a lot

Yeah thats a bit over the top haha but whatever works I guess. I have 5 nests for 11 hens right now and there's never an issue. I think I will build 8 boxes, 4 on each side of the coop.
