Nesting box vs roost bars

Hi everyone,
Our family is brand new to chicken raising. We picked up 4 leggies and 2 Australorps from tractor supply at Easter time. I have them in a coop with 4 12"x12" nesting boxes 18" high. And a roosting bar across the coop at the same height. All of my chicks prefer to roost in the boxes and not on the bar..... is this normal? How do i get them to use the roost bar as they are filling the nest boxes with poop. They haven't started laying eggs yet.

Yes, it is normal behavior, which is why roost bars should always be higher than nest boxes

That makes perfect sense now.....that explains why the were roosting on top of the boxes until I installed a slanted roof on them.
