Just finished our coop this weekend, and getting ready to build a nesting box. Put a metal roof on the coop and have enough left over to cover the top of the nesting box. Was thinking about doing that to keep them off the top of it. If I do I will make sure the corners are bent under so they can't hurt themselves on it. Any pros or cons to this idea? Thanks for the help.

Pros would be it would be easier to clean and the chickens would be less likely to roost on them. Cons They will still try to roost on it. Mine were able to roos on my nesting boxes and they are metal and have a large slant. I have no clue how they did it but they managed. best of luck and watch out on the sharp edges

The chickens won't care what it is made out of they will roost on it if it's flat.

Try making the top of the nesting box at an angle / from the front to the back - that way they cant stand on it.

I planned on slanting the top to discourage them from roosting on it. Thanks. I just wanted to make sure there wasn't any reason not to put the metal on top other than the possible sharp edges which I will take care of.
