We just recently received our chickens three weeks ago. We have 2 EE's (atleast I think they are) and 2 BR's. We hope to get 2 buff Orps soon. Anyway, my husband is building the coop and run and I found two old lemon boxes that I want to use for the nesting boxes. They are made of wood and measure 9" in depth and 20" in length. My concern is that they aren't deep enough. Should I have my husband modify them? Thanks for your input.

I did read that the box should be about 12" deep, but I think your boxes might work, if it possible I would modify them.
show us picture of your coop when it is done.
thank you
