Nesting boxes

My girls are 18 weeks old so I figured it was time to put in the nesting boxes. I'm using crates with a board on the bottom and front to keep the bedding from falling out. The coop floor is sand. They keep taking all the bedding out and somehow are pulling the board out too. Any suggestions what to do? As they get closer to laying will they stop destroying them? Thanks!

Heck, at least your seem to know where the nest boxes are.....mine don't even seem to realize that they are there. My girls are 20 wks.

do you have the boxes at least 18" of the floor? you may want to see if you can locate some nesting boxes from an old chicken farm. that has worked really well for me.
