Just finishing up the nesting boxes to add to our chicken coop. We have 3 Buff Orpingtons and 2 White Plymouth Rock that are 12 weeks old. DH built a nesting box (with2 boxes) that will be attached to the side of our coop. He will be cutting out the side and attaching this along with a flip top for gathering eggs. Should there be venting in the boxes or windows, or do the girls like that area darker? I figured 2 boxes would be more then enough for 5 birds. We had gotten more chicks then intended (you know....chicken math) and realized since they are getting so big, that it would be better to 'remodel', if you will, & add an addition to the coop instead of craming the 5 girls plus the nesting boxes in the original coop. Any ideas or input???:/

The boxes should not have vents and be draft free. No windows as well.... I have a couple of sets of nest boxes in the coop and the ones in the area screened from light get used the most. They like to lay in dark areas. Hope this helps!

Thanks! It does help. I figured they might like to have privacy when laying, but not having done this sort of thing before, I figure it couldn't hurt to ask. Thanks again.
