Nesting for California quail

im getting ready for spring egg laying and this is my first spring with California quail.
Will they lay in a nesting box or just wherever Like cots do?

I think (I haven't personally kept them) that they will choose their own, private spot and build a nest so have straw and hay available for them to use. Make sure they have lots of privacy so the hens feel safe enough to nest. They are gorgeous birds.

It depends on where you put them in. I recommend a well planted aviary per pair. If they feel comfortable, they might lay in a nesting box. If they're nervous, they might lay all over the place. Mines make their own nest on the ground hidden in brushy cover.
