nesting?

Why does my wyandotte scratch around & move all the hay out from under her bottom before she lays an egg? My Leghorns will just make a smooth round spot & lay the eggs on the hay. 2 of her eggs broke so I lined the nest with a piece of cardboard which helped but she scratches for the longest time trying to get all the grass/hay out of the way? any reason, just curious

Some of our hens do that too. It is like the hens don't know when to stop "rounding out" the nest.
