Introducing myself, after weeks of browsing this forum for information on chicks/coops/feed/etc. I'd always start from Google and end up here! So I thought I should join

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

My chicks are almost 4 weeks old. I'm very new to all of this--haven't even owned a pet in the past 22 years! Thoroughly enjoying it so far...though I'll be glad to reclaim my laundry room in the next week or so when the coop is ready.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

7 chicks. Originally intended to get 3-4. Figured that maybe there would be some mortality during the chick stage, so decided to get 6. Accidentally picked up 7 and couldn't bring myself to pick one to put back!

(3) What breeds do you have?

5 black australorps and 2 rhode island reds

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Google, repeatedly.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I've gone through a metamorphosis over the past year, which has brought me to the new hobbies of vegetable gardening and chicken raising. Prior to that, my hobby seemed to be raising children

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I have four kids ages 21 to 11, no pets. I'm a childbirth educator and provide support services to Washington State midwives and birth centers. Hope to be a midwife myself once the kids are all grown up. I'm originally from the UK but have lived in the Seattle area for more than 22 years.

Your story sounds a lot like mine. I am a reformed chicken hater. I also found BYC multiple times by googling for chicken info. Feel free to roam the forum and ask questions as you go.

I never thought I would have chickens, either. Now I can't imagine ever living without having them. I certainly never thought each chicken - or duck - would have its own personality. A flock of chickens isn't just a collection of animated pecking, pooping, egg-laying feathers!

May you enjoy your chicken experience as much as I have enjoyed mine!
