I moved to the country and wanted some chickens. We decided to try the Americaunas for a few reasons. Colored eggs, the same breed can have differnt colors and they say they are friendly. I built a new coop keeping predators in mind and it seems to be working. We have had our problems. We bought 3 one escaped and was gone after we moved it to the coop. The other two were fine until about 12 weeks old and started acting funny. It would eat and drink but was very sluggish and its head didn't stretch out like a chickens do. We had one left and bought 4 more chicks. We followed the how to guide and decided to introduce thes chicks to the 13 or 24 week old. I put a cage in the heated hutch and the next morning the older hen was laying on the cage. So I let them out and she hearded them to a laying box and has been a mother hen for 4 weeks now. It has been way cool. They now go free range for a while each day while I baby sit them. It amazed me that the young hen took to them like she did.

G’Day from down under Larrycauna :frow Welcome!

Aaaaw, that is so awesome that your hen adopted the little ones! :love

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Hello! :welcome Thanks for joining! That's too bad that you lost 2 chickens! I'm sorry.

That is good that she adopted them!
Learning to experience. Little bugger flew over my head and down my back. She went in the trees two days later we found some feathers. The other not sure what happened but she died in my wife's arms. That's three animals that she has held in death. I Calle the pet Hospice lady.
