Hello everyone! We haven't purchased our chicks yet. We are waiting to finish rebuilding our fenced in, raised bed, garden. We're still deciding on butting the chicken run up to the garden to allow them the run of the garden. We are hoping to have the garden done by mid June and a coop up by early spring. Does the chicken in the vegtable garden sound like a reasonable idea without to many drawbacks?

Chickens will destroy your vegetables with scratching, digging and eating any parts they enjoy. Chickens are best kept out of veggie gardens except, before you plant you can let them in your raised bed and they will turn over the soil very well for you. After last harvest, you can let the chickens in again and they will clean out any leftover veggies, and plant parts. They will be happy if you share some of the icky looking veggies, or buggy ones with them. Some folks plant a separate chicken garden of things they like to eat. They grow it thru raised wire so the chickens won't damage the roots. Then the plants can renew themselves.

Thanks for the welcome, and the quick help! I had an idea they would make a large salad out of my garden. I was hoping there was some way they could help me out. I never thought of them working over the soil. Good idea. Thanks !!
