I want to get chickens! Really, I would like to have only two. BUT I want at least one rooster but don't want to have babies in the future. I would never be able to let any of them go. I get easily attached. I want more than one though cause I know chickens are social. I need some advice on what to do. Can I get two roosters? Are there breeds that won't mix that way I can get a rooster and a hen?
I am a little knowledgable about chickens. We had them growing up and I had a pet rooster that was mine only (which is where this rooster obsession came from). Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! If you don't want fertile eggs do you really need a roo? I can tell from your post that you do like them but one roo and one hen is not ideal. An ideal ratio is 10 hens to 1 roo. With just one roo he would overbred the hen and could cause her serious damage from over breeding. Keeping 2 Roos is possible if you don't have any hens for them to fight over, often sibling Roos can be brought up together quite happily. Here is a nice article on keeping a roo ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/keeping-a-rooster

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

Thanks! No I don't want fertile eggs. Don't really care about having a hen. I was just assuming a Roo and a hen would cohabitate better than two roosters. You suggest a breed? They will be mostly free range. That's if I can be brave enough to just let them wonder. I will worry about them always though.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2, roosters can be fine with each other as long as there are no hens to fight over, and not one of the real gamey breeds. If you are going to let them just free range, you probably want to stick with some sort of light breed that is a really good flyer so they have a better chance at avoiding predators... usually there are plenty of free roosters available, you might just see what you can get in your area... usually mixed bantams are easy to find, and for breeds ones like colored Leghorns, Buttercups, Hamburgs, Fayoumis, Lakenvelder, Penedesenca etc might be considered...
