I first got chickens back in 2014 or 2015 when I lived in the NC mountains. Unfortunately, our dog managed to get to them. We then moved to an area where we didn't have the space for them, and earlier this year moved to SC, where we have a nice, large fenced area and a sturdy, well-ventillated coop. We got 5 pullets in July - 2 Golden Comets and 3 Barred Rock. The comets just started laying this week, and the rocks are still a few weeks away from laying, I think. I also enjoy gardening but hadn't been able to do much until recently; I planted herbs just outside the fenced area which the chickens should be able to sample once the plants are bigger. I purposely planted a couple of them inside the area and discovered that they must like oregano (they kept digging it up and I kept replanting it until it finally expired this week!). They seem to have no interest in basil, but the plant has benefited from them scratching around it. Our 4 cats enjoy watching the chickens through the sliding glass door and have stare-down contests with the chickens, who seem to be interested in them as well. I actually didn't realize until recently that I had not officially joined the site, because when we first had chickens I browsed a lot of the posts. I am glad to finally be "official!"
