I'm wondering how far off the ground they can be, like if I were to get a bunch of milk crates and stack them up would that work??? Would the chickens be able to get up there if they were stacked like three high? Any ideas?

Milk crates, 5 gallon bukets, boxes in the wall, a shelving unit. :p They all work out well. They should be easily able to get up 3 milk crates. Put a little piece of wood across the front, toss in some litter for them to nest in, and they should be able to learn to use them. There are a few ideas floating around here as some also use cat litter boxes and empty cat litter buckets on the side! Enjoy!

mine are about 16 in off the floor they are about 1 foot x 1foot x 1 foot i have a small sapling (2in dia) across the front about 9 in from the front of the nest box they use it as a perch to get in and i put wood shavings in the nest box keeps the eggs from breaking adult birds can get in easly....homefarm....

Yes the milk crates will work fine. just put something so they can walk on in front of them.
