New Autumn Treat!

Yay - good idea - I'm making a whack of apple pies and applesauce so I will spread the joy...
We have a deck above the back yard and we go out and fling things off it. The chickens must really believe in heaven! They refused red cabbage however! And they're from the South Shore of Nova Scotia (heavy duty sauerkraut producers). hmmph!

Re: potato peelings

Regular potato peelings are fine. It's the green ones that are not good for man or beast (or chicken), and potato sprouts are very poisonous, too.

My little snobs turn their beaks up at apple peels. Which is funny, seeing how wild they are for shredded broccoli, which is green like my Granny Smith peels. They seem to think apples are declasse', and won't touch them.

I gave my chickens a bannana once and they acted like I was trying to trick them into eating poison. They wouldn't touch it.
Things I have found they love so far:

Sweet corn
canned corn
peas
canned green beans
bread
cooked pasta
cheese
french fries

I am constanly sneaking food out of the kitchen for them to try.
I gave them a can of spinach once and they left it there for me to clean up the next day. They didn't seem to care for apples much.
They are so funny to watch when they get a new treat.....they have to stare at it and walk around it for awhile....and look at each other wondering who will be the first one to peck at it.
Once one of them gives it a peck.....game on!!

Our chickens like apple peels now, but they didn't get too excited the first time. The next time they were thrilled. They like spagetti and it's fun to watch them eat it. They really like rice. I think they think it's little worms, like their chicken brains are wired to recognize certain things as delicious food.

They love dandelion greens. I gather a big bunch at least once a day and they eat them out of my hands. My little rooster jumps right up on my knee.

Oh yes I forgot the dandelion greens! I pick those and some clover every day for them......and they love it. I wonder what I can give them in the winter instead of those?

Do they eat hay? Or will I need to buy lettuce at the store?

I've found that my chickens love luffa Sponge gourds as they came into season as of September. This was my first time growing these. I cut them in half before they become hard and they eat all the insides like wild animals.
