I got four rhode island red pullets today. I've been planning to get them for a while now, but I just kind of went for it today. I had originally planned to just stop by the store and see if they had/could get the feed I wanted for them (scratch and peck corn and soy free) but then I saw they only had 7 RIR pullets left! So I had to get them. I bought the feed, pine shavings, a heat lamp, a feeder and waterer, and the chicks all at once, then got them home and put together their new temporary housing. They are in my bathroom right now so my pittbull doesn't get at them, though he doesn't seem terribly interested in them anyway. They are already so docile and let me handle them without a fuss. They are all eating and drinking well, active and running around chirping like crazy. Every hour or so they all cuddle together and take a 5-10 minute nap, then scatter and get food and water. It's pretty adorable.

Rhode Island Red's are my favorite. When we first got chickens about 5 or 6 years ago, one of them was a rhode island red, and she was so friendly. I had a call for them, and she'd come running to me and follow me around the yard thinking I had food. Once they were too old to lay we let them have free run of the fenced back yard.

I found RIR to be the meanest chickens that I ever raised. Pecked my hand every time i grabbed for eggs. The roosters were just as nice. Enjoyed butchering the roosters. Sold every hen that I raised.

We purchased our first chicks yesterday. We have two Barred Rock (Henny Penny and Luna) and two Black Sexlinks (Hermione and AnnaBelle). This is all so new to my son (age 7) and I. We have a lot to learn! These forums have been wonderful so far!
