Eggs are just too expensive and we eat a lot of them. And chicken, too. We have 16 unsexed brown leghorn chicks arriving in a couple of weeks. Building coop in a few days, getting brood box ready tomorrow. Wife is really excited. We have 28 acres, of which 4 acres is dry land, about 2-1/2 acres clear and mowed. We just bought this property last year so garden not established yet but I will be rototilling and fencing today to keep the bunnies out. I tried to plant onions and some broc and stuff last fall but the wascally wabbits cleaned me out. I never see them when I have my shotgun in hand but they are cavorting everywhere when I don't have it with me. Some hawks and eagles around, so a little leery of free ranging the birds but might try on a limited basis. Mostly they will be confined in coop and covered grazing/scratching pen. Not sure if we want to keep a rooster permanently or not. Semi-rural bayou location so no regulatory issues and neighbors probably won't mind. Anyway just introducing myself, didn't mean to write a book there.
