I moved to South Bay a few weeks ago and the house came with an old but massive chicken run/coop (we think the previous owners kept ducks as well). I thought no better time than now to try out keeping chickens and tried my best to clean out the coop and patch some holes in the fencing (I’m still worried that it’s not entirely predator proof, since I don’t know whether they buried fence apron and we live in an area with lots of coyotes, raccoons, etc).

here’s our five golden comets enjoying their first meal in the run. Excited to learn lots from everyone. :)

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

I definitely recommend you replace the chicken wire with hardware cloth. Chicken wire is extremely flimsy and anything can chew through it. You can either bury wire down along the perimeters or even bury railroad ties (my favorite). If you feel safe sleeping in there at night, birds will be safe too. Good luck and welcome aboard!
