Hello everyone have herd and read some lovely posts on here and was hoping to get some help. I have started breeding French copper Marans and I must say the egg colour wow I've Neva seen an egg like that and it's very impressive, but this morning I've had 2 very beautiful chicks hatch and I have another 4 just pushing through now and doing very well. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to sex them, I know some chicks you can tell by there wings and others by there comb but is there any other way?

Also could anyone give me advice on showing chickens as, I go to the Newbury show very year without fail and next year I would like to show my cockerel but would like to know what they look for in a chicken and also what they look for in the eggs as well as I'm guna take some of them with me to show.

Thank you becki

You should post over here on this thread and ask the experts:

! Pleased you joined us! Sorry, I've never been a good gender guesser - give them a three or four weeks and then post some pics - someone will be able to tell you then. Good luck to you!

Hello and welcome!

Under the forum menu... go to 'chicken breeds', then go to 'what breed or gender is this' and start a post with a few pics of the chicks in question.
You will get a lot more traffic/views on your question by doing that. I don't know enough about marans to even hazard a guess, so can't help you directly on them.

Most chicken breeds have a 'Standard of Perfection' that is used as the guideline for judging birds for show and breeding purposes.
I just googled the phrase.... french copper marans, standard of perfection... and got numerous hits, including one for a 'marans of america' club.
I don't know anything about the club or its goals, but you may want to check out their site and others to get some background on the breed and breeding preferences. Standards are also discussed.
I would post the link, but I think posting links to outside sites is frowned on, so don't want to do that.
Good luck with your birds!

Ahhh, brilliant thank you, yes all new to this but will have a look under the other categories and see if anyone can help. Thank you again :-)
