Hello everybody,
I live in Brooklyn and after talking with a friend who lived in a farm and has plans to raise chickens in his backyard, I got curious and while looking for information I stumbled into this website.

I am totally new to chickens and pets in general, but I am quite interested in getting started. I'm a family guy who works a white collar job, and I am lucky enough to have a backyard in my house that could host a coop. I'd like to start a small garden with vegetables on my rooftop, but that is for another topic...

I also have twin 4-year olds and would love them to interact with the chicken as pets, but I am also drawn by the idea of having fresh eggs every morning!

There are a lot of resources on the website so it will take some time to digest everything, but in the mean time wanted to introduce myself to the community!

Good for you! Good for you to have a yard. Good for you to start with information gathering! Good for you to want your kids to have such a great experience!

You can do this with some morning checking on feed and water and some evening gathering eggs and enjoying their company.

And I'll tell you one more thing from Los Angeles, the more urban the environment, the more we need these "down home" experiences to keep our sights on our humanity and our part in the environment. We're in what might be called the burbs of LA but still less than a 1/4 mile from a major 4-lane artery that runs the length of the Valley. I had a rooster for a while and one neighbor a mere 10 or 13 yards from my house actually thanked me for his morning crowing because it made her feel like she was out in the country.

We no longer have him. I guess there's a big difference between the mothers who are up at the crack of dawn and at the 10am execs who don't want to hear about it before their alarm has gone off and they've had some coffee....

But I'm betting you and your family are going to LOVE it!
