P.S. Here is an article about winterizing. The key is keep them dry and plenty of ventilation, plus, choosing cold hardy breeds. Except for their feet, combs and wattles, chickens seem to keep themselves pretty warm. You can rub some petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on those parts to help ward off frostbite.
I just read about a rare landrace breed from Sweden, the Hedemora, that developed very small or no combs and wattles, and their feathers are more like fur - very fluffy. They might be in trouble if they got wet, but it sounded really interesting. But there are other breeds that are listed as very cold hardy, and MUCH less expensive! Here is a list.
