New cat in the hood

Someone in our neighborhood has a young male cat that has decided it enjoys harassing our chickens, and it has tried to attack them as well.

Tomorrow we're going to leave the adults out instead of the youngsters (who are 2-4 months old) and let the adults teach that

cat a little lesson about messing with chickens.

If that doesn't work, we're going to get a trap (and probably catch a chicken instead of a cat with our luck).

A swift peck with a sharp beak to the head usually does the trick to teach young cats who is boss.

I wouldn't trust smaller breeds of chickens around a wily old tomcat, though. Some of those things are huge!

I love cats....indoors, as a pet. Had one for 14 years who slept with me (and ONLY me) every night...and she NEVER went outside, not a single day in her life. However, outdoor, free roaming cats around here get a shot in the rump from the BB/pellet gun....usually never return. DW won't let the chickens stay inside (LOL), so I must protect them where they live. Good luck

Our neighbor's cats might pose a problem for our girls too. They had the rooster "treed" one morning, him up on a branch and the four cats on the ground below, all staring up. lol

Don't know how that ended, but the roo came out okay.

Our indoor/outdoor cat has loved "stalking" the birds, but hasn't ever really pounced. This morning, in fact, one of the hens was stalking (and pecked!) him on the rump.

We had a barn cat who was taught the lay of the land by my chickens, ducks and geese.
He only needed one peck, one pinch and one tail pull and they all respected each other.
He ate the field mice and the birds let him live.

Yup, all the outdoor cats in the neighborhood stay away from my birds. Some still come under the fence but they have all been chased off by either a pack of hens or the rooster at least once. Now they just watch.

If your chickens are not big enough to teach Tom the rules get or borrow a gander. That will do the trick!
