Hi, Rosa here, I'm from Oklahoma and live on a small 5 acre track of land. Me and my family are new to chickens and got our first shipment of baby chick May 9. My husband talked me into it and so I started googling different breeds and topics and every time came back to BYC which has been very informative.
We decided to go with Silkies and Cochin as we are more into pets and not any kind of functionality. I will say no one warned me about the very real problem of "Chicken Math", lol. Was only going to get 3-4 and we ended up with 21(6 cochin, 15 silkies). Unfortunately 2 baby cochin chicks didn't make it, they just weren't right from the start but the rest are doing great. I am super amazed how fast they change within just a few days not to mention a few week. Below is a pic of one of our babies and how much it has changed in just a few weeks.
