New chick in KY

I just joined last week after lurking for a few weeks. We had already decided to get some hens for the kids (4H projects) and stumbled upon some little chicks at a local farm supply a couple weeks ago. Started with 8 pullets, I lost one last night. I have no idea what breed they are yet - their bin was marked "Assorted Rainbow layers" and my best guess at age is 6weeks or so.. They're going outside in a small covered pen when it's not too blazing hot here in Northern KY. Their coop is nearly ready for them and I'm excited to learn as much as I can reading here. I would also love to "meet" people near me.
