Just picked up our 4 Black Australorp and 2 Light Brahmas a couple of days ago. We are newbies to raising chickens. So we did a lot a research and are trying to keep up with the same game plan like everyone else here in Northern Illinois.
Problem #1 Primier comfortchick Heat brooder was way too hot. So we used the old heat lamp method. The first use was too hot also. So we raised it up. Now, we can only get the temp in the tote to reach 90. I guess better cooler than cooked.
Problem #2 Since we planned on getting Silkies and they were not available, is it ok the add them in with the other chicks once we get them? Or are we starting all over with a new batch of babies?

Greetings and welcome to BYC! So glad you joined us. Grats on the new little chicks! If you get the new ones within a couple of weeks of the first set, they should be able to be added without incident. Once there's a 3 week or more age separation, it becomes a bi tricky and you really just have to be more careful/cautious/observant. There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

Welcome aboard to BYC family gr8 people tons of information loads of fun enjoy shake your tail feathers

You can figure you are starting over with new chickies. If they all were raised together from the start - you would be good to go. But adding silkies later - they especially tend to attract negative attention. They are docile and with crests and beards obstructing their vision - they are sitting ducks. Other breeds tend to bully & feather pluck them because they look so different.

Please check out the "Look but don't touch," method of integration. via the search box. You could also post on the "Silkie thread," and see what they suggest.

G’Day from down under Ckonopin :frow Welcome and Congratulations! :clap

I agree with Diva.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out. This one in particular I think details a little more the 'look but don't touch' method Diva mentioned.

This is a link to BYC's active Silkie Thread which Diva also mentioned.

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best Wishes and Good Luck!
