I am brand new to raising chickens. Just got my first two chicks two days ago! One is a week old Barred Rock, and the other is a two week old Silkie/Gold Lace Wyandotte. Hoping both are hens, but they weren't checked by the breeder, so only time will tell. I decided to join the group because I think that I can learn a lot from so many others who are much further along on this journey than I. Looking forward to "meeting" the members!

Nice to meet you Marsha, and welcome to the flock. Does the mixed silkie look more silkie to you than the other part of the mix? If the silkie features seem to be dominant in your chick, I would guess she/he will be difficult to sex before 4-5 mos. of age. With silkies you don't really know until they lay or crow.

When she is older you may want to post clear closeups of head ( to show any comb) and side view at "what breed or gender is this."

hope it is a girl.

Right now, my Silkie mix is looking more like the Gold Lace Wyandotte. In just two days, I've noticed more coloring on her/his back and wings. Also, there are no feathers on the legs, although there are five toes.
