Hi yall

My name is Zoa, and I live with my hubby & 4 kids on a 7.5 acre hobby farm in North Dakota. We have 2 Nigerian Dwarf Goats (wethers) and a small but fun coop with 5 hens, one roo and 4 guineas. We also have 2 overweight indoor cats, a handful of barn cats, a dog and an over active hamster!!

Just today we went and got 25 chicks- silkies, araucanas, and bantam cochins. They are 1 day old and so far, they are doing good!

We are fairly new to chickens... we had them several years ago for a few months until a pack of dogs raided our chicken run and killed our whole flock while we were gone one day. We haven't had them since until just recently. We are hoping to have better luck this time, as we really enjoy having them! The six we have now, we purchased already grown from a nearby farm. We know that 2 of the hens are barred rock, but the other ones we don't know what the breeds are.

I found this site through google- I did a search for chicken info, and found hours of helpful information here!! I am hoping to continue to expand my chicken knowledge by joining the boards here as well.

Anyway- glad to be here

Hi there! Welcome from western Kentucky! I'm sorry to hear about your previous losses -- I hope this venture goes better for you! There are lots of good ideas and suggestions for deterring predators and building a safe run / coop for your flock. Stick around a while -- you'll meet lots of friendly, helpful folks who love to share the joys (and trials!) of backyard chickens!

Welcome to our forum!

There is a wealth of information here. Use the search feature, or post your question.

At this hour you may not get as many welcomers as some get, but we hope you enjoy our forum anyway.

Welcome to BYC! I started with chickens over the summer and the people of BYC have been great. Please visit my BYC Page for my blog links that you may find informative or amusing.

You might consider putting an electric fence around your run. Also make sure the run is sturdy farm fence and not chicken wire. Finally, I strongly recommend a poultry net over top if it is not currently covered.

Poultry netting is shown on my chicken products page.
