(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I am new to chickens. I knew I wanted to raise Magpie ducks on the small farm we are starting, but had never raised any type of poultry before. Before the ducklings arrived, my Mom’s friend needed to move and re-home her seven hens. So it just kind of happened. We got the chickens beginning March 2021 and the ducks end of the same month.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Seven chickens and 21 ducks

(3) What breeds do you have?

1- Buff Orpington, 1- Plymouth Rock, 2- Rhode Island Reds, 3- Gold to brown Wyandottes (not sure about colors) or Barnevelders? Don't know!

21- Magpie ducks

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

They have such fun personalities and are so curious and love to be petted. The ducks are not as bright as the chickens but are hilarious to watch.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I am an Herbalist and love starting our farm

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

My husband and I have two teenagers, two French Bulldogs, and two cats and we are staying mainly in a tiny 5th wheel on 47 acres that we are turning to a small herb farm on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. I have a BS in Biology and am getting my MS in Herbalism.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

I have been reading the forums for the past few months on and off but have so many questions now that I am interested in incubating eggs and growing our flocks. I know I will have a ton of specific questions and also it felt strange only reading and not being a member. Glad to be around poultry loving people.

Same here! I have been caring for chickens for like 7 years now? Everytime my dad gets posted, I change houses, and have to leave my chicky babies. But this time, I got to spend a long time with my babies and I had been following BYC for a long time. For 1 year maybe? I have been helped ALOT by it. But yesterday due to an emergency I signed up!
