Hello,

I've been reading the forums for a couple of months now. Waiting for our first chicks to arrive May 6th. We've done our homework, but still have a few questions.

I've read that sea fish is really good to feed your hens. Can you also feed them fresh water fish? If so, can you freeze the fish and feed them to the hens in the winter?

Also do you feed the hens whole fish? Or pick the meat for them.

Sorry to be a pain, but I think we'll have several more questions soon!

Next stop: Nesting boxes and roosts.

Thanks for the help. Jack is 2 1/2 and he's going to be the chicken man in a couple of weeks

Freshwater is fine. I'm not sure how the chickens will handle the scales, so if it were me I'd scale them or skin them. I'd also give it to them raw so the bones are softer. Some people will even toss a chicken carcass out there and the chickens will pick it clean. My girls get most of our unwanted left overs, meat and veggie. You'll find those chickens super handy if you have younger kids in the house. Its nice knowing food isn't going to waste. Just be sure they are still getting a well balanced diet or it will affect the egg production, once they get to that age. Enjoy your chicks!
