Good afternoon. I have become a new chicken owner. My son is in high school in the FFA/Ag program. He has shown great interest in backyard chickens. So, we adopted 5 Rhode Island Red chicks from our local Tractor Supply back in early March. We were gifted a small chicken coop and promptly put it together and placed pine shavings. After a couple weeks, during the early morning hours, a predator opened the coop (opened it how???) and took all of our chicks.
I went back to TSC and got 6 white leghorns. And then I got a dog kennel and erected it over the coop.
I now lock the doors with zip ties every night.
So far, so good. These chicks are about 10 weeks old, I think. The girl at TSC didn't know how old they were when I got them, but they were losing fuzz and getting feathers, and that was about 4 weeks ago.
