(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Brand New to the Chicken owning community. My wife and I just recently moved about 25 miles North of Kansas City, MO on 4 acres. We're excited to start raising some chickens.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Currently in the process of building my coop.(I"ll post pictures once she's finished). We have our chickens ordered and scheduled to be delivered mid-march.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We are starting out with 3 Buff Orpington hens, 3 New Hampshire Red hens, 3 Silver Laced Wyandotte hens and 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte Rooster.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
We are looking to forward to eating our fresh eggs and hopefully in the future raise some to harvest for meat as well.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I enjoy doing woodworking, playing poker, doing DIY projects around the house.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My wife and I have been married for just over a year now. We have no children together, "YET" but I have 4 children from a previous marriage. I served in the Army for 12 years and medically retired in 2015 from a knee injury I received while deployed in Iraq. We have 2 dogs, Boomer (a boxer) and Midas (an English bulldog) and 3 cats, Boots, Truman, and Sophie. After getting out of the Army I opened a Hawaiian Shaved Ice business in Kansas City, So I do that 4 months out of the year and just Enjoy life the rest of the time. My Wife is a Physical Therapist in Kansas City.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? Since I've been interested in raising chickens I have been doing a lot of research. It seems like every question I look up seems to find it's way to BYC, so I decided I'd better get on the bus and join the community.
