(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My 13 year old daughter and I are a new chicken mama “team”….with my husband‘s helpful support.
We got our first newly hatched chicks, 8 barnyard mix, in early April, 2023.
We are still trying to figure out what breed they are, and have had so much fun learning.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We originally got 8 chicks, 4 of which seem to be roosters. We didn’t want a rooster, but we love them all. I did rehome one rooster last week, who was making life miserable for the little flock. We are watching the other 3 before deciding what to do.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Good question. We know we have 2 silkies, no idea if they are hens or roos. One part or full black maran (Might be a roo….oh I hope not, but she crows now and then). One part or full RIR (Probably a roo). We have a white hen we can figure out. We have an EE we can’t figure out and might be a roo. We have a brown hen we don’t know breed, and the one roo we gave away was a gorgeous mix, but too bossy/bully.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I never realized how fun it would be. They have such personality. I’m not sure how to describe why I’m loving it so much, but I am. Work and all.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Being a mom and nana. Gardening. Reading. Cooking.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Ha! We have raised 10 awesome children, by the grace and kindness of God. We also currently have 11 grands! Chickens are giving my last daughter at home and me something fun to do together. We also have a dog, 2 cats. And have had lots and lots of other pets over the years. But this is a first with chickens.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found you through a questions search, and joined because I always have questions and need help.
