New Chicken Mama!

A lot less than those whose aren't. Only about 5% of chicks vaccinated against Marek's Disease have still gotten Marek's.

Marek's is spread by dander from infected chickens and can travel as far as 5 miles, which is why it is so hard to control.

Common-sense practices help keep us from bringing many chicken diseases home. Keep any new chickens quarantined at least a month (realistically two weeks) away from your healthy chickens and observe them carefully for any issues.

If you go to poultry swaps or to someone's place who has chickens, even if you bought nothing, change your clothing and shoes and wash up before tending to your chicks/chickens.
Sorry for the late reply! That’s terrifying! :hitI’m glad I spent the extra money on it!

It told me to introduce myself so I will!

I just bought 7 silkie chicks from valley hatchery, now 6 since one passed away a week after arriving.

I’m BRAND NEW to raising chickens and thought silkies would be a good start!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yeah! I’m brand new, got my first ever batch of chicks June 2024

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
6 at the moment, I originally bought 5 but valley hatchery sends 2 extra just in case, 7 arrived and one passed away from the incurable respiratory illness

(3) What breeds do you have?
Just silkie chicks! I haven’t raised any chicks before hand nor ever had real experience with chickens at all, i grew up with cats.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
All of it! So far I’m absolutely in love, they are the missing puzzle piece I needed in my life!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
im a huge gaming geek, i play on ALL platforms! including index VR.
what i have so far is: PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Amazing PC, Quest 2, Quest 3, Index VR with full body tracking.

I'm also a digital artist so i have a apple Air with procreate and a apple pen.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I lived in Alaska for 5 almost 6 years, I was raised in NC most of my life before Alaska so my whole family is VERY southern

I only had cats my whole life, this is my first time with chickens! I have a purebred maincoon cat that I had to leave behind with my parents when I moved out 2022

I wanted to take him with me but my partners parents don’t allow cats and we live with them at the moment.

I’ll share a photo of my cat here!
