About 5 weeks ago I aquired 2 of the tiniest chicks I had ever seen from a friend of mine who knew I was planning on starting my chicken adventure this spring :)

I instantly fell in love with the little boogers and soon via Google I found BackyardChickens :) and learned they're bantams. Through reading I've learned much and realized I have much to learn and many questions to ask!! So I joined :)!
Unfortunately, two days ago a dog got ahold of the yellow one, who was developing beautiful black feathers :( it was so sad. I have new precautions in order for that problem as I feel at fault for the tradgedy..
Anyhow, this is the brown one today:

I assume she is a female and the one I lost a male, simply based on my amateur observations. He seemed bigger and already getting a comb. I'm not completely positive on that though.. lol
I'm getting her some friends this weekend cause she's awfully lonely. I've bonded with her a lot in the last few days cause she "talks" to a stuffed animal and shreaks when I walk away from her brooders.
I'd be really grateful to hear any advice about what breed she might be... or if its even a she!! :) and I'm looking forward to being part of the BackyardChicken community!!!! :)

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. I'm sorry about the loss of your chick to the dog. It's always sad to lose one of our flock. Unfortunately dogs and chickens don't typically mix well. Dogs seem to view chickens either as prey or as chew toys. I don't see anything in your chick screaming rooster, so I suspect your observations are correct regarding its gender. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your chick.

It is never easy to lose them. I hope your heavy heart heals soon.

I hope you can find her some buddies soon. For now, give her all the extra lovin'!

Make yourself at home here and welcome to our flock!

Always hard to lose them to predators like dogs. Definitely get your chick some friends. Chickens are social creatures and require the attention of others of their kind. I'm glad you and her have had some good bonding time though. When you get the new chicks, just put them in with her at night. That's what I did once and in the morning, everything was just fine. I had one chick by herself for a day and all she did was cry when I left the room. I felt so bad for her! So I drove to the store and bought her four new sisters. Boy was she happy!

As of now, your chick looks like a female. We'll be able to tell more easily as she ages.

Good luck with her and future chicks!

Thanks so much for everyone's kind words and support! It's exciting to hear my super-amateur observations are likely correct for my first guess at sex :)! I went this evening and got 3 more bantam chicks!! Was relunctant about introducing them so soon, due to the 4 week age gap but they appear to be doing marvelously! :) she seems much happier and so am I. Can't wait to find out more about the new babies and its great to know I've got you guys to help me along my chicken adventure!!! Will post some photos tomorrow as the little squeakers are worn out :) I'm so excited! :) thanks again everyone!
