Hi all! I’m Liz and I live in northeastern MA. 10+ years ago, I had about 15 hens, 4 roosters (2 standard, 2 bantams who were found as chicks in a park by our local animal control officers), plus 4 call ducks. Fast forward a divorce, remarriage, 2 kids, and I now have two 22-week old hens, purchased a day-old chicks just before the pandemic got crazy here. My son (age 3) picked out a New Hampshire red and named her Horse! She is a super-friendly, easy-going girl, just like my son. My daughter (age 5) picked out a buff Orpington and named her Pip. She is skittish and grumpy, just like my daughter sometimes (hah hah)!
Due to the pandemic and trouble getting supplies for the coop, the girls lived in our bathroom for much longer than planned... nothing like taking a shower with two nearly full-grown chickens watching you!
They now have a coop built by my dad, which is attached to the existing catio he built for our 4 cats. They chickens can come and go from the catio, as can the cats (who can also get into the house from the catio). They all get along very nicely, though the cats are displeased that the chickens have ruined all the grass in the catio! We let the chickens out in our fenced-in yard when we are outside, but I’m wary of predators, so I don’t leave them out unattended. They are very attached to each other (& my kids are very attached to both of them), so losing one would be devastating.
No eggs yet, but we are anxiously waiting!
Look forward to lots of good info here!
