Hi everyone,
I'm very excited to begin raising chickens for their eggs. I've never had chickens before so I've been doing a lot of research. I should have my coop in a couple of weeks and hope to find my chicks soon after.

My only concern is that I will become to attached to them, so what will I do when they stop laying eggs? My husbands advice was not to name them. Does anyone have good advice for me on that subject?

Look forward to chatting with you,

! Pleased you joined us! Lots of opinions for when they stop laying. They won't likely come to a dead stop - it will be more like a slow decline. Some folks opt for the crock pot method. Others just keep them on as pets. Some give them out to petting zoos and the like if they are friendly. Good luck with whatever you decide.

A lot of people keep on their retired layers and let them live out their lives on the farm. If you're husband doesn't like that idea, you could rehome them when they are 2 years old or so, and someone else will get eggs- you could get new chicks when the first ones are 1 yr. or so, so you continually have younger ones to fill in the vacancies.

from California, I have some chickens that are almost 2 years old, may have to get some new ones and do some rotating myself.
