Good morning! My husband and I purchased our first chicks a week ago. We've considered adding them to our little family on the ridge for a while and decided now was a great time. With 10 Acres to run we have the room!
We have 8 (1-2 week old) chick's. Four New Hampshire Reds and 4 Asian Blacks. They are all so beautiful and have started showing their feathers! Watching them grow this past week has been absolute joy!
Adding our flock was for several reasons... and by no means in any order... Insect management, eggs, watching them, giving them a happy home, and for our daughters. My grandmother had chickens growing up, some neighbors and a few family members on his side also have chickens and they all love their flocks! (Our land has a huge open meadow/field, front & back yard, garden, wood shed, barn (used as a wood shop ), and wooded areas.) I'm extremely concerned about coyotes, bears, local dogs, foxes, hawks, and racoons; thus, their coop will be a fortified fortress! (When they are not enjoying wondering the yard!)
I love crocheting, cross stitching, sewing and baking. We have a nice backyard garden and enjoy spending time at the river with family.
My husband and I have been married for 7 years and have two daughters, 6 & 4. I work as a part-time teller at our local bank and my days off I spend homeschooling our youngest (Pre-K). Hubby works as a machinist and all around jack-of-all-trades.
I found BYC doing some research on a skin condition I noticed on one of our Asian Black chicks. As I was reading through some threads I saw how helpful everyone was. I'm suspecting favus, but not confident what's safe to use on a week old chick.
I'm excited to join this community
