Hi All!

A friend at Sage River Farms in Snohomish, WA said this was the best group to join to learn about having backyard chickens. We got 9 chicks this spring and are quickly learning that we have a lot to do and we know diddly squat!

We have three Silkies, two Cinnamon Queens, one ISA Brown and three unknown (they were part of a friends mail order that had a variety - we think one is a black giant, one a buff orpington and one possibly a white giant). It's a happy mess. They all snuggle up for naps, so they seem happy enough. We've been handling them for four weeks now and they all have such distinct personalities! I never knew! The ISA Brown and the Orpington are the friendliest and always let me hold them and come to me whenever I'm near. So sweet.

We have a half acre plot outside of town where I do a lot of veggie and perennial flower gardening. We have mason bees and love anything to support pollinators. We have two little boys and two little dogs that the chickens will probably outweigh at some point.

I just learned that the black giant may have coccidiosis and I'm freaking out. They're still in the holding pen in the garage. We're planning on building a pen this weekend. I'm off to the co-op to get medicated feed. I hope they all don't get it. Darn it. Like I said. I'm new at all this. Wish me luck.

Thanks for all being here and being a resource!
Jenny

Hi Penny, It came from the same place as the white giant and the orpington. I got those three a week after the other five. A friend got them mail order in a group of 30 from McMurray Hatchery as part of a grouping of brown egg layers.
