New chicken mommy question

I have 4 baby girls that are 5-6 weeks old. I have a friend who has a 1 year old rooster that needs a home. Can I add him in with my baby's or will he hurt them?

He will hurt them. Your girls need to be at sexual maturity before you introduce a rooster.

It’s usually best to have similar sizes in a flock. He will probably injure them right now. Wait until they are at least 8-10 weeks, maybe more. Until they are at least his size.

I understand, I feel bad for roosters too. But the risk of hurting your girls is too great in my opinion. Wait until they lay their first eggs, then it s safe to have a new, adult rooster.

I felt bad cause he needs a home,

'Homeless' roosters are a dime a dozen, most everyone with chickens has one...or more. I have 6 of them, due to be stew here in a few weeks.

Don't take birds that you 'feel sorry for'...unless you have separate housing and can afford to feed them.

You've got new chicken fever...one of the biggest learning curves in chickeneering is to know your housing limits....and don't 'cave to the cuteness'!
