New Chicken Owner from Maine

I am interested in getting two chickens for a pet. We have an8-foot wall around our property and we have never had any predators take our guinea pigs or our rabbits. We were thinking of using an area under our large screen porch as a temporary coop (until we can figure out which chicken coop is best for us -- there are so many out there). The area has a 12 foot ceiling at the highest point and a 5 foot ceiling at the lowest point, and is enclosed with lattice overlaid with chicken wire. Do you think that would be sufficient for the chickens? Also, we live in the Upstate of South Carolina. Which breed would be best? Someone recommended Cochin to us.

Im "really" new to owning chickens but tried the night time introduction. It worked out great for us. I only have one Domique hen that is still acting a bit testy with the new girls..
Now Im looking to add to the flock once again.. Six hens and counting... lol
