Hi,
We are just getting into chickens
. Our coop is getting delivered this morning, so we are really excited. We have 4 chicks (hopefully pullets ... they are supposed to be). We have one Buff Orpington named Gertrude, One Wyandotte named Henrietta, one Rhode Island Red named Evie, and one Chochin named Ivy. We might change Ivy's name to Isabelle ... haven't decided. I had already named Ivy when my son chose Evie as "the" name for his chick. We'll see
. They will be 3 weeks old on Friday. I can't believe how fast they grow! We just got them on Sunday and they are already inches taller. They can jump / fly as high as their enclosure now so we put hardware cloth over the top. My son is 6 yrs old, so he is just loving it that we got chicks instead of 4 or 5 month old hens. That was my plan, but he is such a great age for chicks, so we decided it would be fine. When they are a little bigger (and of course outdoors) we are going to fence off part of our yard for them to be free in on a daily basis, then back to the coop at night. When we are home, they can have the run of the whole yard ... just want to control exactly how much chicken poop gets to the rest of the yard or our porch - LOL! I have a friend who has 6 in her backyard, and she is fencing her yard into sections too because of the poo
.
I'm so glad this forum exists because I'm sure I will have lots and lots of questions, even after reading two books on keeping chickens!
