Howdy. Kathleen and Russ here. Got chickens last week, 3 months old. Have been keeping them in the coop so they can get used to their. Home. Took them out to check out our backyard today and they keep hiding in a flock, all 4 of them. I try to pick them up, feed them, and they run from me. Got suggestions? I have tried scratch but they still run from me. Will they wan to go back to their coop tonight on their own?

Hi Kathleen & Russ, it's nice to have you here!

Give your birds some time to get used to you...maybe sit quietly nearby them without making sudden moves, talk quietly and maybe hold a couple of mealworms in the palm of your hand where they can see them. Don't try to pick them up too fast, that will just startle them.

Best of luck!

Scratch is really an adult treat and not meant for birds under 28weeks. You can try dried mealworms. I would just show this in my hand and make a chick call and show them it in a hanging feeder in run door to get them back in. Can put in a cup and shake as well. Offer treat once in. :)

At sunset I would keep enough treats at the door of their coop, If that doesn't help I would watch them as they roost and come when it is dark and hold them and put them to their coop, don't chase them unless you are sure you are going to catch them, otherwise they panic and will be lost
