Hello BYC!
We are Kat and Tony, (husband and wife) homesteading in Central Ohio, and are so excited to be part of this community! We are new chicken parents to three Easter Eggers, now almost 17 weeks old, Dino (Magdinolena), Chubbs (Ostara), and Jeezy (Jesusa). We wanted names that were a play on the Easter traditions, and they got these nicknames as baby chicks and we often joke that they are the musical group dubbed "The Winged Felons" due to their good natured mischief!
We drove and hour North to pick them up from Meyer Hatchery, and we have had a great experience with them.
Jeezy was our little cross beak who became a beloved pet, and has since crossed the rainbow bridge. We did not know how much we could love a chicken until Jeezy captured our hearts! Though gone too soon, Jeezy will always be remembered as she is laid to rest in our pawpaw garden next to her sister's coop.
We will have three new EE babies hatching October 2nd, and are excited to see how they grow and mingle with our older girls. Our garden is organic, regenerative and we grow foods, spices and medicinal herbs since Kat is a community herbalist
It has been our dream to add chickens for years and are really enjoying being new chicken parents. The addition to our family has only enriched our daily lives. Our Boxer mix Chasca loves the little floofs and Chubbs tries to take rides on Chasca's back! Our two cats seem to believe we borrowed them from Jurassic Park... Chubbs and Dino are just as spoilt as our furbabies
their personalities are huge and Dino just squatted for the first time this week!
We are a couple in our mid-30s who became friends when we were children, and have spent the past 15 years moving to a simpler, quieter lifestyle where we can be good stewards of our little bit of land and for our animals. We regularly take in wild orphans, collect heirloom and lost native plants, and study ways we can improve our symbiosis in our region.
Our extra hobbies/jobs/etc include Tony being the foreman of a local organic landscape company, as well as being a sculptor and special effects artist making monsters and other creatures. He is a 3d artist that has a contracting background and designed and built a beautiful home for our girls, with a beneficial chicken herb garden going in the perimeter.
Kat is a metalsmith, who was raised as a multi generational herbalist and currently works locally as a community herbalist and proponent for promoting our lost native foods and herbs. We love experimenting with heirloom food species from Ohio and our own family's cultures to see what foods and medicines thrive here.
We raise all of our animals holistically and believe in preventative care as well as natural husbandry like our families did back in their home countries. We love reading through this community for tips and advice and it is amazing how supportive, welcoming and caring this community is! We really look forward to learning from everyone
Thank you for letting us join!
