Hi everyone,
I am a newly-re-minted chickeneer in Jacksonville, FL. I had chickens around as a kid (more than 40 years ago), but only recently added them to my backyard.
I have 4 little girls right now, they are about 14 weeks old. According to the sign at TSC two are "'Mercaunas" and the other 2 are "Thorps" although I sincerely doubt they are any pure breed.
My primary concern was teaching my 2 sons (8 and 11) about caring for animals that take care of you. Food doesn't appear at the grocery store by clicking a Youtube ad. Plus, chickens are the most amusing things to watch run around the backyard. They play and posture and fight over snacks. Better than Netflix. And, someday, we may get an egg or 2.
Right now the chickens are our only animals. That is not counting the rabbits that live under the shed, the squirrels who tap on the window to remind me to feed them, or the female cardinal who is trying to keep my front-door kickplate from stealing her man. We lost our 2 cats not too long ago. One passed at 18 years old and the other was a few months shy of 20 when he passed away.
We found out about BYC from a friend who is a member here. She kept referring us here when she didn't have answers so it makes sense to join the community. Besides, where else can I show off my chicken coop design?
