Hello everyone! I am a new chickie mama. We purchased 4 black star chicks, 2 red star chicks and 4 red new hampshire chicks a week ago. I welcome any and all suggestions and help as I have read many threads, posts etc. Questions I have; when may I remove marbles from their waterer? Is a good way to keep their water clean since they like to scratch the shavings etc into the water? I have read mixed posts about how long to feed my babies chick starter, 12 weeks or 16-17? Thanks for any suggestions. I love reading the forums here.

Michelle :)

Hello, Michelle, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I use a "baby bottle" I made out of a vertical chicken nipple and a sports drink bottle I picked up at Aldi.

You can feed the starter until they are 7 or 8 weeks old then put them on grower or an All Flock feed and keep them on that indefinitely. When they get to about 16 weeks old, put out a separate container of oyster shell. They will eat it when they need it for egg production. I also keep a second container of granite grit for them.

They can be on starter for 8 weeks then need grower feed till 18 weeks then can switch to layer feed if will lay soon. Otherwise starter grower can be from hatch till laying then later feed layer feed when laying. Use chick grit till 8 weeks then poultry grit. Oyster shell starts at 15 weeks. Hope this helps clarify.

Hello! You can stop placing marbles in their water once they are about 2-3 weeks old. Usually the highest risk of drowning is the first few days. I like keep water elevated to prevent shavings from getting in, but that can only be done when they're older. For now, you can try installing a poultry nipple waterer, that will definitely keep the water clean. Congrats on your chicks! :)
