Hello!
I've just welcomed home a little flock of eight mixed chickens almost two weeks ago. They were all roughly a week or two old when I got them and I can't believe how quickly they are growing!
I'm a Canadian (Northern Ontario) transplant living in Silicon Valley and a city girl at heart....but I'm loving the "simpler" life up on an acre of land in the hills. I've got two toddlers (ages two and three!) at home with me and together we're planting veggies and herbs, taking care of our family of cats (including some newly inherited barn cats!), aquariums, and now chicks. And maybe a few ducks to come . My husband would not be surprised at all if he came home one day to me hanging out in the midst of a whole herd of goats.
I'm a photographer, a writer and a life coach and a maker of things....natural cosmetics, baking, textiles, art, .....you name it, I probably have taken a crack at making it!
Here are the ladies (and I think one lad ):
Delilah, who is my baby but who I think might actually be a "Samson" haha. She's from a bantam assortment....my leading guess is Ameraucana but I'm open to more experienced guesses!
Gladys (Cochin) and Ethel (Welsummer). Gladys is the flock busy body and the sassiest of my chicks. Also being the biggest and fluffiest, my little bantams always try to sleep under her like she's their mama! Ethel is the baby teddy bear and begs everyone - human or otherwise - for cuddles.
Tiny little Mabel is the runt but also the prissy old lady. Haha I can just see her in pearls and reading glasses with her knitting. Also from the bantam assortment my research tells me she'll be a Mille Fleur d'uccle with those funny feathered feet of hers!
Another shot of Gladys because she's such a wacky chickie haha!
Estelle up close and Babette in the background. The third of my Bantam assortment, Estelle is always looking for a good place to nap. When she isn't napping, she's stretching into a new nap position. My guess is either a black headed blue Silkie or a black Frizzle Cochin. Thoughts? Babette is the lighter, fluffiest one of my two Golden Comets. They're both gregarious, friendly little gals. Lucille is a little too fast for pictures though...she's always a big yellow blur!
Irma, my other Welsummer...in a rare moment of repose. She's enormous now...easily the biggest of the bunch and most akin to a baby dinosaur. She's a tough, no-nonsense cookie, this one!
Looking forward to finding my own "flock" here!
