New chicks

So we just got 6 chicks and I wanted to try this heat method instead of a heat lamp. It's a warming plate that you can lower that they can huddle under. We also have a heat lamp for back up. I'm struggling to tell if they are too cold or just sleepy. Some are all the way under the heat plate and some are laying halfway out or all the way out. But they are all sleeping or resting and not super active right now.

You don't need two heat sources. Turn off the heat lamp.
If they are huddling together and peeping loudly they are too cold.
Set the heat plate at a hight where they can stand underneath without having to crouch down at all or touch their backs to the hot part.

Yeah, you're right. They are all spread out and sleeping. Some in and some out. I think the hot plate is doing its job just fine. Thank you!
