Hi!

I'm in East Texas, and i've never raised chickens before. My husband brought home 6 3 week-old buff orpington hens this afternoon. Yikes!

They're beautiful birds, but i'm going to need all the advice i can get.

We made our decision partially because of the thorough and interesting information we found here at BYC. Bringing them home today was a big surprise to me. My husband built a small make-shift pen in the back yard to hold them until he and his brother can build a hen house....hopefully this weekend.

Like i said, i know NOTHING about chickens, except what i've read on this site right here. Is there any advice the oldies would like to give me?

Also, we have a cat and 2 dogs who are very curious but who seem to have gotten the message to leave the chics alone.

I stay home, so the chics will be mostly my responsibility. We are raising them for the eggs, and may in the future decide to get a male so that we can raise some for meat. But i hope that is far in the future, 'cause i just don't think we're ready for all that.

O.k. I'll stop rambling on now.

Hi all

The best advice I can give you is to buy a copy of Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens. It'll answer questions you don't even know you have!

Thanks a bunch!
