New Coop Build

My family and I have been working on a coop for a few weeks. We have our chicks in a brooder and boy are they growing fast! The sooner we get this ready to be habitable the better. Thought I'd share some photos of our progress so far. Happy to hear comments on design, ventilation, anything else?

Planning on deep litter in the bottom although if all our ladies turn out to be ladies we may be over-chickened and need to downsize.

And here's a photo of my overall plans. Nesting boxes on the left and a ramp on the right side "shed"

Had to rig a way to clamp the shingles down around the bend of the gambrel roof while the roof sealant cures.


She def didn't like being away from the rest of the flock...

What's the square footage? That looks a bit too small...

coop is 16sq feet with 3sq feet of nesting boxes separate and some extra where the ramp will be.

we planned on 6 in the coop, got 8 chicks in case we lost any or had a rooster. So far, they are all healthy and still don't know about the rooster.

It's cute but too small for more than three or four. Add length now!

It's also short, unless your smallest children will be doing all the clean-up in there. If you make a large walk-in run, roofed, it can be coop too.

For ventilation the recommendation is 1 sf per bird. I don’t think the ridge vent will be adequate. Plan on some louvered vents at the gable ends of the coop

For ventilation the recommendation is 1 sf per bird. I don’t think the ridge vent will be adequate. Plan on some louvered vents at the gable ends of the coop

There are 8x8" vents at each gable end that we'll be able to leave open for ventilation and I'm also planning on making the door have a screen door inside if we need a lot of airflow on really hot days.

The run is minimum size for 8 chicks. For 8 chicks you need a 32 sq ft coop, so double what you have now.
